Moving Around FSU
Classes have begun and campus is in full-swing! As your student settles into their routine for the semester, we encourage you to talk to them about exploring all of the transportation options available to them. From Seminole Express to virtual parking permits, Nole Cab to biking on campus, there are a variety of options that can help your student avoid a ticket and make it to where they need to go on time!
- Seminole Express - Seminole Express is the University’s bus system that services campus and surrounding Tallahassee areas. Buses run from 7:00 am - 8:00 pm Monday-Friday and all students need is their FSUCard to ride the bus! Your student should download the TransLoc app, where they can monitor the bus stops and routes in real-time. All of the buses have a stop name and abbreviation assigned to them. For instance, one of the common on-campus routes is the Renegade Route (abbreviated RE), which takes students in a loop from the University Center to Westcott to the Student Union down Chieftan Way and returns to the University Center. Buses are on about a 10-15 min loop. Visit https://transportation.fsu.edu/bus and select the route you would like to explore and also see the various stops included along the route. On each bus, there is either a button to push or a string to pull indicating that a stop has been requested and from there, the driver will make sure to let passengers off and on. Some stops include off-campus locations like apartment complexes, area grocery stores, and more.
- Nite Nole - Nite Nole is a part of the Seminole Express bus service provided by the University and specializes in evening routes throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. Students can ride the Nite Nole from 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm Monday-Saturday. The Nite Nole services on-campus locations and some off-campus locations as well. For a map of the Nite Nole map, visit https://www.talgov.com/Uploads/Public/Documents/starmetro/fsu.pdf#page=6.
- S.A.F.E. Connection - S.A.F.E. (Student Alert Force Escort) Connection is a free taxi service on campus for students. From 7:00 pm - 2:30 am seven days a week, students can receive rides to and from any on-campus location. Students call (850) 644-SAFE (7233) and provide their location, destination, and number of riders. This is a free service for any FSU student which aims at getting students safely from one location to the next!
- NOLE Cab - If your student is without a vehicle or just needs a ride, Nole Cab provides discounted rates for students with a valid FSUCard. Students can also get a ride to the Tallahassee International Airport for a flat rate of $15 plus tax. For more information, visit https://transportation.fsu.edu/transportation-services/commuting-options.
- Virtual Permits - Students currently enrolled in classes and paying tuition receive one virtual permit at no additional charge. They must register their vehicles by visiting https://transportation.fsu.edu/parking/parking-permits. Once a parking permit has been secured, students can monitor parking availability in the garages by downloading the myFSU Mobile app and selecting the “Parking” icon. Overnight parking is available on the top floor of all parking garages, as well as the top two floors of the Traditions Garage, and floors 2 - 7 of the Pensacola Street Garage. All parking spaces require nose-in parking (unless a valid Back-In Permit is displayed). Vehicles backed into a space will receive a citation. Don’t forget to remind your student to move their vehicles on game days--more information can be found at https://transportation.fsu.edu/parking/parking-information.
- Biking On-Campus - Many students choose to bike on campus and there are a few options available to your student if they choose this option as well. First, it’s important for your student to register their bike with FSUPD by calling (850) 644-1388 or (850) 644-3660. From there, they can visit bike repair stations on campus at Jennie Murphree, Salley, Tully Gym, and Legacy Walk (across from Bellamy). These stations have wrenches, hex keys, and other tools in addition to air pumps. Most buildings have bicycle racks in near proximity--it is important that your student secures their bike appropriately (a U-lock is recommended). For a map of bike racks and repair stations, visit https://map.concept3d.com/?id=1235#!ce/38711?ct/0,32613,33494,38722,36980. Finally, if your student is new to biking, encourage them to take the Cycling Savvy Course, which provides information on traffic laws, defensive driving, mitigating risk while cycling, and more. Students can take the course by visiting https://canvas.fsu.edu/enroll/R4F8CR.
Regardless of the option your student chooses (or a mix of all of them!), we encourage them to be safe, provide extra time to navigate to their destination, and be informed about campus events that may impact their transportation options. If you or your student have questions about parking or transportation on-campus, please contact transportation@fsu.edu or call (850) 644-5287.
