Finals Resources

The holidays are coming up! With Thanksgiving on the horizon, it’s easy to trick your brain into believing that the semester is coming to a close. Unfortunately, there are still two weeks between Thanksgiving break and winter break, the latter of which is finals week. Luckily for students here at Florida State, there are plenty of resources on campus that will keep you focused and prepare you for finals.

The first place on campus that students should turn to for academic support is the Academic Center for Excellence, or ACE, located in the Johnston building near Landis Green. ACE is focused on helping students develop the study skills and success habits that are necessary in college and in their futures. ACE offers peer tutoring where students can work with a tutor to help make the most of their study time. They offer one-on-one course-based tutoring, study skills tutoring, group tutoring, and more. ACE also offers a variety of workshops throughout the semester that provide an interactive opportunity for students to develop their academic skills. All workshops are free to students with no registration required. A few of their workshops coming up in November include: Write Your Wrongs on 11/8 from 2-3, Addressing Symptoms of Burnout on 11/9 from 7-8, and Strategies for Test Preparation on 11/10, 11/29 and 11/30, all from 7-8. Visit the ACE website to see more information about workshops and other upcoming events and to explore everything else that the Academic Center for Excellence has to offer!

For some individual or group studying, students can visit any library on campus to utilize their public studying spaces or to use a study room that they’ve reserved ahead of time. Strozier and Dirac libraries both offer different group and individual study rooms/spaces to students that they can reserve for a specified time. It’s important for students to remember to also take care of themselves throughout their finals preparation. Students can get so wrapped up in studying and preparing for exams that they forget to do the basic necessities that are important to their physical and mental wellbeing. FSU Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is fully committed to ensuring that students have the right resources on campus to promote their health and wellness. Located in the Askew Student Life Building, CAPS provides a licensed and professionally-trained staff who offer a welcoming and confidential place for students to come and receive support in all areas of life. Students can get online or in-person one-on-one counseling sessions, group sessions, couples sessions, and they can even walk in for their services. On the CAPS website, students and families can also find crisis resources which include: coping with stress and FSU resources that are available to help, healthy thinking and coping strategies, how family members can be supportive, information about common reactions to stress, and more. Visit the CAPS website to explore all resources that they have to offer!

Preparing for finals can be stressful and intimidating, but you don’t have to do it alone. We encourage students to explore the resources on campus that will help them develop their academic skills as well as their health and wellness. Learning these skills now will better prepare students for this finals week and all the rest to come!
