Getting Involved

As family members, you want your student to be successful while they are away at college and be able to find a community that supports them the way that you do. A great way for students to find this community is to get involved on campus. There are a variety of ways for your student to get involved during their time at Florida State, many of which they may already have an interest in from when they were in high school. Whether it be joining a club/organization in their academic college, competing in intramural or sport clubs, being a representative in student government, or having a job with the student union; the opportunities are endless! 

Being involved in college also has its benefits. Students that are involved have multiple competing responsibilities with classes, meetings, and events. By being involved they are learning how to manage their time effectively and are building on those leadership skills that employers are looking for. Getting involved on campus also provides a break from coursework which can alleviate stress and create a college experience that is more enjoyable and balanced overall. As students continue to become connected to campus, their sense of belonging strengths and they are able to create lasting relationships with other students and grow their networking skills with faculty and staff. 

Check out below some of the opportunities students have to get involved: 

  • Nole Central- Florida State’s online club and organization database. Students and families are able to search through the over 750 Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) on campus using the search tool on the homepage of the website. Check out Nole Central at https://nolecentral.dsa.fsu.edu/
  • Fraternity and Sorority Life- If your student is interested in fraternity and sorority life, with 4 councils each having multiple chapters in each, there is a place for them! 
  • Interfraternity Council (IFC): the governing body for 15 men’s fraternities on campus. The Interfraternity Council is dedicated to the academic and social development of its respective fraternities and their members.
  • Multicultural Greek Council (MGC): the governing body for 8 culturally-based fraternities and sororities on campus. These organizations all strive to benefit the FSU community through philanthropy and community service, while celebrating the diverse identities of their members.
  • National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC): consists of nine predominantly African-American fraternities and sororities. These organizations are committed to scholarship, community service, and cultural enrichment.
  • Panhellenic Association (PH): the governing body for 17 women's sororities on campus
  • Campus Recreation- Whether your student is wanting to participate recreationally, on a more competitive play field, getting outdoors, or is looking for an on-campus job, Campus Recreation could be the place for them! 
    • Intramural Sports: Intramural Sports offers over 40 team sports leagues, tournaments, and special events throughout the year.  Whether you’re looking for one night of competition, a weekend, or an entire season, we’ve got an IM event for you. Check out more at https://campusrec.fsu.edu/sports/im/
    • Sport Clubs: Florida State University’s Sport Club Program is home to 36 sport and recreation-focused student organizations. From competitive club teams to instructional clubs, you’ll find clubs for nearly every interest. Check out more at https://campusrec.fsu.edu/sports/clubs/
    • Outdoor Recreation: Is your student ready to explore the outdoors around the region? Have them try a skills clinic, join a outdoor adventures in-person or virtual conversation, or try a low-cost Outdoor Pursuits adventure trip for a group hike, bike, climb, float, and more! https://campusrec.fsu.edu/outdoors/ 
    • Campus Recreation Jobs: FSU Campus Recreation employs over 700 people annually including 42 full-time professional and maintenance staff, graduate assistants, and over 700 students across its various program areas. https://campusrec.fsu.edu/staff/ 
    • New Student and Family Programs- Here in New Student and Family Programs, we would not be able to be as successful at welcoming and transitioning our incoming Noles and their families without the help of our amazing student leaders. Our Peer Navigators facilitate a section of Chart Your Course, a 1-credit class designed to help first-year student successfully transition to Florida State, and serve as a guide and mentor for the students that are in their section. We also have our Orientation Leader position who take on the responsibility of welcoming over 8,000 students and 10,000 family members annually into the FSU community and embodying what it means to live out the Seminole Creed.
