Office Spotlight: Academic Center for Excellence

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), located in the William-Johnston Building, is Florida State’s learning center here to help students develop study skills and personal success habits that are necessary for today’s college student and valued by future employers. ACE offers a variety of resources and opportunities to provide an academic environment that inspires students to excel and use all the resources available to them.

One of the resources that current students greatly benefit from is the list of peer tutoring opportunities ACE offers. Peer tutoring is a process that supports student learning by strengthening a wide variety of educational skills; working with a tutor can help students make the most of their study time and engage with students that are knowledgeable in their course area. Maybe they would like one-on-one tutoring for their Chemistry class but works better in group tutoring for their Introduction to Sociology class; whatever works for your student, ACE has the answer. The four tutoring types ACE offers (course-based, group, math, and study skills) are created to help students find what works for them to be successful both in and out of the classroom.

Course-Based Tutoring: Offered in a variety of subject areas, course-based tutoring allows your student to work with tutors on content covered in their courses and helps to build strategies for doing well in the course. Courses change on a semester basis and are subject to tutor availability. Tutoring is available by appointment which can be made online or at the front desk of the ACE. https://ace.fsu.edu/tutoring/course-based-tutoring-learning-studio

Group Tutoring: If your student prefers a group setting, ACE offers group tutoring for a variety of subjects. These sessions are to answer student questions for the course, so students are asked to come to the tutoring session with notes and questions. https://ace.fsu.edu/tutoring/group-tutoring

Math Tutoring: For those common math questions and concerns, ACE offers math tutoring for students specifically. Students can receive help with College Algebra, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Calculus for Business, and Calculus I-III. Additional math courses may be available subject to individual tutor availability.  https://ace.fsu.edu/math-studio

Study Skills Tutoring: Study skills tutors offer students assistance in a variety of areas, including strengthening your time management skills, note taking tips, how to properly email your professors and/or teaching assistants, as well as hone your study habits.  Study skills tutors are available by appointment or walk-in. https://ace.fsu.edu/tutoring/study-skills-tutoring

Some examples of what study skills tutors can help in are:

  • Strengthen time management skills
  • Learn new study strategies
  • Learn how to properly send emails to professors/teaching assistants
  • Incorporate good note taking skills into your classes
  • Create a weekly schedule to help you balance and keep track of your class work, as well as your other responsibilities

ACE also offers students the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an ACE instructor to review and make improvements to their study and personal success habits. These meetings are free and involve assessing a student’s need and developing a plan of action for the student to reach their academic goals. Topics that could be covered are: time management, learning styles and memory, reading strategies, and general study skills.
