Sustainability & Food for Thought Pantry

We all uphold the value of sustainability as members of the Florida State University community. Florida State’s Sustainable Campus and Food for Thought Pantry are here to help all students grow sustainability on campus and in our community. You can support and utilize these resources today!

When it comes to sustainability at Florida State, Sustainable Campus sets the example by leading environmental and social action. They strive to conserve resources on campus and to strengthen the positive impact that the university leaves on our environments both on campus and off campus. How can students support the efforts of Sustainable Campus?

Being sustainable can all start in the classroom! You can sign up for academic courses rooted in exploring sustainability, and Sustainable Campus maintains an updated list of relevant classes, degrees, and professional programs. You also can explore tackling real-world sustainability challenges through research and collaboration as a Sustainability Fellow. All Noles can even track their progress in sustainability knowledge and experience with Sustainability Pathways, which ends with degree badges to show your exploration of sustainability and professional aspirations.

Beyond the classroom, there are a variety ways for students to gain hands-on experience with sustainability and get involved in efforts aimed at building solutions in our communities. Check these out:

  • You can dive in at the Seminole Organic Garden to grow your own food, practice wellness in outdoor spaces, and rent garden beds for your needs.
  • Maybe you want to grow your food practices by reducing food waste and helping utilize leftover food products—sounds like the Food Recovery Network is for you!
  • Want to cheer on the Noles in every way? You can volunteer to promote gameday recycling and decrease waste (by the tons) around Doak Campbell Stadium with Garnet & Gold Goes Green.
  • Green the community and build your own community by educating, engaging, and empowering all Noles on sustainability with Eco-Reps.
  • Bring your ideas into action along with the goals of Sustainable Campus and apply for a Green Fund Project Grant.
  • Struggling with transportation around campus? It’s time for you to consider renting a refurbished bike package with reCycle Bike at an affordable and energy-effective cost!

Between additional events, tools, resources, and trainings, every Nole has something to learn with Sustainable Campus. Check out more that FSU Sustainable Campus has to offer here!

Did you know that the Department of Student Support and Transitions runs a food pantry for currently enrolled students and supports personal sustainability across campus? Located in University Center A, Suite 4148 (4th Floor), the Food for Thought Pantry is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm every Monday through Friday. To support our fight against food insecurity, the Pantry partners with Second Harvest of the Big Bend to provide food and other items to students in need.

How it works:

  1. You walk into the Pantry and immediately visit the front desk. There, you will check in with the receptionist and verify that you are an enrolled FSU student.
  2. After checking in, you just pick up a bag and essentially shop like you are in a grocery store. The Pantry has a wide variety of foods to choose from, and it changes consistently based on donations. The Pantry also has toiletries and other items that you may need!
  3. On select items, the Pantry will have a limit on how many of that item students can take. Other than that, you can take what you need!

The Food for Thought Pantry is a free resource for all students on campus, which means that every Nole is welcome! Given that no payment is required to visit the Pantry, donations of non-perishable food items, cash, or gift card donations are much appreciated. You can donate to the Food for Thought Pantry by clicking here, and you can make contributions via the Pantry’s Amazon Wish List by clicking here. For more information on engaging in building a more food secure and sustainable campus, contact the Department of Student Support and Transitions at 850- 644-2428.

Additionally, the Pantry has provided a wish list of items, if you, your organization, or your family are able to donate. Items included on the list are:

  • Canned tuna
  • Other canned meats
  • Pasta
  • Pasta sauce
  • Granola bars
  • Dry cereal
  • Shelf-stable milk (boxed or canned)
  • Almond milk
  • Peanut butter
  • Mac & Cheese
  • Rice
  • Dried beans
  • Canned diced tomatoes
  • Instant mashed potatoes
  • Spices (salt, pepper, onion, garlic, basil, oregano, etc.)

To uphold sustainability across our campus and surrounding communities, each of us are responsible for finding new ways to learn, engage, contribute, and join in these efforts. We hope you continue to use your time at Florida State and in the future to commit to sustainability!
