Class Registration is Here: Is Your Student Ready to Register for Classes?
It’s that time of the semester: class registration. Starting March 8, Florida State University students are able to view the Summer and Fall 2021 Registration Guides and search Summer/Fall 2021 course listings through myFSU. On March 15, registration for Summer and Fall 2021 begins and is staggered based on credit hours throughout the rest of the Spring semester.
While class registration can be overwhelming for students (and their families)—especially during the COVID-19 pandemic—remember to take a deep breath and know that you have it all under control. FSU has several resources available to make registering for classes as smooth as possible.
Here are a few things your student should consider as they begin planning for classes:
Know their enrollment appointment. FSU staggers enrollment dates by the number of credit hours each student has. To view the enrollment appointment schedule, you can visit the University Registrar website. Both the Summer and Fall Registration Guides contain the same enrollment appointment schedule, so your student can be sure they know when to register for classes.
Address any holds on their account. Even if your student’s registration window opens up, they cannot register for classes with a hold on their account. Holds can be viewed on the right side of the screen on your student’s myFSU portal in the “My Tasks” tile.
Holds on your student's account can appear for a variety of reasons such as when they haven’t completed Orientation, need to complete academic advising, or if they need to fulfill their immunization and health insurance requirements, just to name a few. Instructions can be found for each independent circumstance beneath the hold on your student’s myFSU portal. You can read more about holds through the Student Business Services website.
Visit their advisor. As class registration rolls around, many advisors will notify students of upcoming availability for the advisors in each department. Taking the time to make use of their advisor’s walk-in hours is extremely beneficial while registering for classes because they can help answer questions about your student's major requirements, recommend classes, and more.
If your student is unsure of where to start in terms of finding an advisor in their college or department, they can head over to the Advising First website. Here, students can find an advisor and have access to additional resources if necessary.
Student Central planning hacks. If your student is really at a loss when it comes to figuring out what classes they need versus what they don’t need, there are a few different programs on their myFSU portal that can help. Once your student logs into their myFSU portal, finds Student Central (SC), and goes to “My Classes,” they are ready to find the following:
- Undergraduate Degree Progress: By clicking the third button to the left of the screen, they are taken to Undergraduate Degree Progress. Through this tool, students can see how far along they are with their undergraduate degree and major. They can view graduation requirements, explore degree plans and compare their progress if they’re searching for a major, and explore careers. Through this, students are also able to see what classes they’ve completed or need for their major, and can drag and drop blocks to create the perfect schedule. If your student needs help navigating this tool, you can find instructions here.
- Schedule Assistant: This schedule-creator comes in handy when your student is trying to find the best class schedule. Students can add classes they want to take and build in breaks in between or around classes and Schedule Assistant can generate schedules for them to view and decide on. Students can edit and “lock” in parts of their schedule as much as they like until they find the best option for their semester. If your student needs help navigating this tool, you can find instructions here.
- My Planner: If your student clicks “My Planner,” they can use the “Plan by My Requirements” tool to ensure that they are taking classes that count towards their overall major, program, or degree. Upon clicking this option, your student will see something similar to an interactive version of their transcript; here, students can navigate and learn what requirements they’ve met, what requirements they still need, and in some instances see what classes can satisfy their requirements. If your student needs help navigating this tool, you can find instructions here.
If you or your student are struggling to use the myFSU portal and need help, you can visit the myFSU Student Central website to receive help and learn more. Or your student can drop in for a Course Registration Help Session:
