The FSU Career Center Gives Students Experience through Programs and Resources
The Career Center is dedicated to making sure that FSU students can have the resources and facilities they need in order to find and gain experience in their potential career field. On top of advising and workshops for preparing students, the Career Center also offers programs such as the Internship Fund and the FSUshadow Program. Both programs are beneficial to students and help them get direct and hands-on experience with the career or internship of their choice.
If your student in need of a way to financially supplement their internship next semester, then the Internship Fund is looking to help you. The Florida State University Career Center understands the importance that internships (and other forms of experiential learning) can have on a student’s career decision-making process. While these opportunities are significant ones, the financial burden may weigh heavily on students that are aspiring to gain practical experience beyond the classroom.
To help bridge the gap of accessibility, the Career Center created the Internship Fund to support students who may be facing financial barriers and to support students pursuing a wide array of experiential opportunities, providing access to opportunities in order to gain new skills and experience the world of work. With the help of New Student & Family Programs, we were fortunate to fund two of our recipients and their experiential learning opportunities this semester. Any single-semester paid or unpaid career-related formalized experiential learning opportunity can be considered for funding including, but not limited to research, sustained creative work, clinical, fellowship, fieldwork, practicum, service learning, student teaching, significant volunteer work, developmental leadership program, and cooperative education.

For students like Matthew Hardy, the Career Center here at Florida State University has created the FSUshadow Program, a job shadowing program that allows students to connect with employers, community partners and alumni in order to have a one-day job shadowing opportunity to provide exposure to many career fields and industries. Hardy was one of 122 FSU students over summer break to participate in FSUshadow and spoke highly of his experience with it. Hardy, a senior majoring in economics in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, was not sure about taking the leap from the classroom into the logistics industry. He had an idea that this was what he wanted to do after graduating, but he had never been able to experience the industry first hand, until this past summer. “Through the FSUshadow program I was able to not only learn about the logistics industry but I was able to experience it firsthand,” Hardy wrote. “The opportunity has allowed me to make a more informed decision as graduation beings to approach.”
FSUshadow, planned for the 2019-2020 summer, winter, and spring breaks, invites all FSU undergraduate and graduate-level students to participate in this program. Students who participate in FSUshadow will gain knowledge and skills related to career decision making and critical career competencies while in college.
Encourage your students to apply for the FSUshadow Program to gain firsthand experience in the career field of their choice and network with potential employers!
