Office Spotlight: Counseling & Psychological Services

Has your student ever wanted to look for counseling but didn’t even know where to start? Counseling & Psychological Services at FSU has all the resources that your student  may be searching for! Formerly known as the University Counseling Center, Counseling & Psychological Services is located in the Askew Student Life Center Building. It is home to psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, treatment coordinators and mental health education coordinators. Counseling & Psychological Services offers a range of services to students.

Office Spotlight: Academic Center for Excellence

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), located in the William-Johnston Building, is Florida State’s learning center here to help students develop study skills and personal success habits that are necessary for today’s college student and valued by future employers. ACE offers a variety of resources and opportunities to provide an academic environment that inspires students to excel and use all the resources available to them.

Moving Around FSU

Classes have begun and campus is in full-swing! As your student settles into their routine for the semester, we encourage you to talk to them about exploring all of the transportation options available to them. From Seminole Express to virtual parking permits, Nole Cab to biking on campus, there are a variety of options that can help your student avoid a ticket and make it to where they need to go on time! 

Getting Involved

As family members, you want your student to be successful while they are away at college and be able to find a community that supports them the way that you do. A great way for students to find this community is to get involved on campus. There are a variety of ways for your student to get involved during their time at Florida State, many of which they may already have an interest in from when they were in high school.

Dealing with Homesickness

The first few months of a semester are always full of excitement. New classes, making friends, getting involved in a totally new community, and learning how to be independent can be thrilling, but can also be challenging. While most students experience homesickness in some way shape or form while transitioning to college life, it doesn’t necessarily make it any easier. However, we have included some ways you can help the transition go more smoothly.

What’s Next? A Conversation with Your Student

Despite the unusual circumstances of the past year, your student has almost made it to the end of their Spring semester. Between virtual learning and navigating a remote environment, FSU students have more than proved their resilience and adaptability.

As this semester draws to a close, it is important to connect and chat with your student about their needs for finishing this semester, reflecting on events throughout the spring, and preparing them for closure and the approaching summer.
